A sea sponge is the perfect addition to a cleansing routine, whether it’s for removing makeup, a full-body cleanse for you or your little one, or even for cleaning a baby’s bum. So, we wanted to provide you with some useful tips how to care for and prolong your sponges life.

Summarizing points

Before Use: Before using your sea sponge for the first time, rinse it thoroughly in water to remove any debris or sand that may be trapped in its pores.

Gentle Cleansing: After each use, rinse the sponge under water to remove any skincare products. Gently squeeze the sponge to expel excess water.

Air Dry: Let the sponge air dry completely after each use. Avoid leaving it damp for prolonged periods, as this can promote the growth of bacteria and mold.

Sanitization: Occasionally, use the sanitizing recipe provided below to disinfect your sponge.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Refrain from using harsh or synthetic chemicals, bleach, or very hot water to clean your sponge, as these can damage its delicate structure. Similarly, avoid wringing it too harshly, as this can damage its fibers and shape.

Before First Use

Before incorporating your newly acquired sea sponge into your bathing routine, soak it in lukewarm water to soften its texture. Due to its marine origin, it’s highly advisable to rinse and check it for any sand or particles from its natural habitat. While the sponge is handpicked and checked in several stages, be sure to perform a final inspection yourself.

After Each Use

Natural sea sponges have the inherent ability to inhibit the growth of bacteria. However, cleaning and drying your sponge after each use is necessary to prolong its lifespan and maintain its hygiene.

Rinse the sponge thoroughly to remove skincare products and dead skin cells from gentle exfoliation. You may need to rinse it a couple of times to ensure it is completely clean. Gently squeeze out excess water and leave the sponge in a clean, airy place to dry.

Periodic Deep Cleanse

Every few weeks or months, your sea sponge may benefit from a deep cleanse and disinfection.

Vinegar Solution:

  • Mix 5 parts water with 1 part vinegar or acetic acid.
  • Submerge your sponge in this solution for 30 minutes.
  • Rinse thoroughly and let it air dry.

Baking Soda Solution:

  • Mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda per cup of warm water (adjust depending on the size of your sponge).
  • Let the sponge soak in the solution for 30 minutes.
  • Rinse with clean water and let it air dry.

Wishing you good luck and a long and happy relationship with your sea sponge!
